When Jesus had been arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, the soldiers took Jesus first to Annas. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas the high priest that year.'; Text[1]=' 2. John and Peter followed Jesus and the soldiers. John knew the high priest and went into the palace. John asked the doorkeeper to let Peter in also.'; Text[2]=' 3. Annas asked Jesus about His teaching and His disciples.'; Text[3]=' 4. Jesus told Annas, "I have always taught in the synagogue or in the temple. I have said nothing in secret. Why do you question me? Why not question those who have heard me?"'; Text[4]=' 5. A soldier slapped Jesus\' face. "Is that the way for you to answer the High Priest?" Jesus replied, "If what I said was true why do you strike me?"'; Text[5]=' 6. Annas sent Jesus to Caiaphas to be tried by the Council. They tried to get many to say false and wicked things about Jesus so they could kill Him. But no two people agreed in what they said.'; Text[6]=' 7. The High Priest reminded Jesus of the charges against Him and asked Jesus to give His defense. But Jesus didn\'t answer.'; Text[7]=' 8. "I command you by the living God, to tell us on your oath if you are Christ the Son of God," the High Priest then said.'; Text[8]=' 9. "I am!" Jesus answered, "I tell you that in the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of Heaven!"'; Text[9]=' 10. The High Priest tore his robes, "That was blasphemy!" he cried, "Where is the need for further witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy - what\'s your verdict now?" And they replied, "He deserves to die."'; Text[10]=' 11. In the meantime Peter was warming himself at a fire in the courtyard. The doorkeeper saw him. She asked, "Aren\'t you one of Jesus\' disciples?" Peter replied, "I don\'t know Him. I don\'t know what you are talking about."'; Text[11]=' 12. After a little while, Peter went out to the entrance. A rooster crowed. Another woman saw him. "This man was with Jesus," she said. Peter answered and swore, "I don\'t know the man!"'; Text[12]=' 13. About an hour later someone else insisted that Peter had been with Jesus. They could tell He was a Galilean by the way he talked. A relative of Malchus, whose ear Peter had cut off asked, "Didn\'t I see you in the garden with Jesus?"'; Text[13]=' 14. Peter denied again. "I don\'t know this man!" Just then a rooster crowed the second time.'; Text[14]=' 15. Peter now remembered what Jesus had told him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times!" Peter went outside and cried and cried.'; Text[15]=' 16. The men who guarded Jesus made fun of Him. They spit in His face. They also covered His face, hit, and slapped Him. "Tell us who hit You?" they asked. They also insulted Him in many other ways.'; Text[16]=' 17. When it was morning the Council met again. "If you really are Christ, tell us." "If I tell you, you will never believe me," Jesus answerd. "So you are the Son of God then." "I am!" Jesus answered. We ourselves have heard this thing from His own lips," they said. "Why do we need any more witnesses?"'; Text[17]=' 18. Jesus was then taken to Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. When Judas saw this, he was very sorry he had betrayed Jesus.'; Text[18]=' 19. Judas brought the money back to the high priests and elders and said, "I was wrong - I have betrayed an innocent man to death." "And what has that got to do with us?" they replied. "That\'s your affair."'; Text[19]=' 20. Judas went to the temple and threw the money on the floor. Then he went and hanged himself.';
