Early on Friday morning, the Council brought Jesus to Pilate the Roman governor. Pilate asked, "What is the charge that you are bringing against this man?" The men of the Council answered, "If He were not an evil doer, we should not have handed him over to you."'; Text[1]=' 2. "Judge Him according to your law," Pilate replied. The men of the Council, who wanted Him put to death falsely charged Jesus with corrupting the people, telling others not to pay their taxes, and claiming that He Himself was a king.'; Text[2]=' 3. Pilate ordered that Jesus be brought to him in the palace. "Are You the king of the Jews?" he asked Jesus. Jesus answered, "Are you asking this of your own accord or have other people spoken to you about me?" Pilate said, "Your people handed you over to me. What have you done anyway?"'; Text[3]=' 4. Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world; If My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews. "'; Text[4]=' 5. Pilate then remarked, "So you are a king, are you?" "Indeed I am a king," Jesus replied; ". . . every man who loves truth recognizes my voice." Pilate asked, "What is truth?"'; Text[5]=' 6. Pilate went out and told the Jews that he found Jesus innocent. The Jews began to accuse Jesus but Jesus said nothing. Pilate was much surprised.'; Text[6]=' 7. When Pilate heard that Jesus was from Galilee, He sent Him to Herod, the ruler of Galilee who was visiting in Jerusalem. Herod was happy to see Jesus, hoping to see Him do a miracle. He asked Jesus many questions but Jesus didn\'t answer him.'; Text[7]=' 8. All the while members of the Council accused Jesus. Herod and his men made fun of Jesus. Finally, they put fine clothes on Him and sent Him back to Pilate.'; Text[8]=' 9. Pilate told the members of the Council and the people that he had examined Jesus and found Him innocent. Since governors had a custom each Passover of freeing a prisoner chosen by the people, he said to them, "Which one do you want me to set free, Barabbas or Jesus called Christ?"'; Text[9]=' 10. Pilate knew that they were jealous of Jesus. While he was waiting for the people to decide whom they wanted, his wife sent him a note warning him to let Jesus alone. She said, "I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him."'; Text[10]=' 11. Members of the Council persuaded the mob to ask for the release of Barabbas and the death of Jesus.'; Text[11]=' 12. Pilate now asked, "Which of these two are you asking me to release?"'; Text[12]=' 13. The people answered Pilate, "We want Barabbas set free. . . crucify Jesus."'; Text[13]=' 14. Pilate ordered soldiers to whip Jesus. They put a scarlet robe on Him. They wove a crown of thorns and put it on His head. They put a stick into His hand. Then they bowed down and said, "Hail, King of the Jews". They also spit on Him, hit Him on the head with the stick and slapped His face.'; Text[14]=' 15. Pilate told the people that he was bringing Jesus out to show that he found Him innocent! Jesus was wearing the crown of thorns, and a purple robe. "Behold the man!" Pilate said.'; Text[15]=' 16. But the members of the Council and the people shouted, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!"'; Text[16]=' 17. Pilate was frightened still more. He went into the palace and asked Jesus, "Where do you come from?" Jesus didn\'t answer. "Won\'t you speak to me?" Pilate asked. "Don\'t you realize that I have the power to set you free, and I have the power to have you crucified?"'; Text[17]=' 18. Jesus reminded Pilate that the power which Pilate had over Him was what God had allowed. Jesus confirmed, "The one who handed me over to you is even more guilty than you are."'; Text[18]=' 19. Pilate tried again to release Jesus, but the Jews shouted that in doing this he would be an enemy of the emperor for anyone who made himself a king was against the emperor. Pilate said, "Look, here is your King!" They shouted, "Crucify Him! Caesar is our king and no one else."'; Text[19]=' 20. When Pilate saw that he would not be able to save Jesus he washed his hands and said, "I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it."
