After Pilate had condemned Jesus, the soldiers took Him and led Him through the crowded streets of Jerusalem to Calvary, just outside of the city.'; Text[1]=' 2. Here they crucified Jesus between two criminals. Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do."'; Text[2]=' 3. The soldiers took Jesus\' clothes and divided them into four shares. But since His coat was woven as a single piece, the soldiers decided not to divide it, but instead, cast lots to see who would get it.'; Text[3]=' 4. Pilate had written a sign and had it put on the cross. It read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." It was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.'; Text[4]=' 5. When the high priests saw the sign, they said to Pilate, "Don\'t write \'The King of the Jews,\' but that \'He said, "I\'m the King of the Jews\' " Pilate answered that the sign stays as he wrote it!'; Text[5]=' 6. The crowd began to mock Jesus. Members of the Council also mocked, "He saved others, but He can\'t save Himself. If... Christ. . . would come down from the cross, we should see it and believe!"'; Text[6]=' 7. The two criminals also mocked Jesus. But after a while one thief said to the other. . . "Aren\'t you afraid of God? . . ." He reminded him that they deserved to die but that Jesus had done nothing wrong. "Jesus," he said, "remember me when you come into your kingdom."'; Text[7]=' 8. Jesus answered him, "Verily, I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise."'; Text[8]=' 9. When Jesus saw His mother and John standing nearby, He said, "Woman behold thy son!" To John He said, "Behold thy mother!" Then John took her home to take care of her.'; Text[9]=' 10. At about noon the sun was darkened and the whole earth was without its light.'; Text[10]=' 11. About three o\'clock Jesus cried aloud, "My God, My God. why hast Thou forsaken Me?"'; Text[11]=' 12. Some of them standing nearby said, "He is calling Elijah!" One of the soldiers ran and soaked a sponge in sour wine. He put it on a stick and gave Jesus a drink. The soldier said, "Let\'s see now if Elijah will come and take Him down!"'; Text[12]=' 13. Then Jesus said, "It is finished." He called out loudly, "Father, into thy hands I commend My spirit." At this time Jesus died.'; Text[13]=' 14. When the captain saw what was happening, and how Jesus died, he said, "Truly, this man was the Son of God!" Mary Magdalene, Salome, and other friends of Jesus stood watching.'; Text[14]=' 15. In the meantime, members of the Council had asked Pilate to have the legs of three men on the cross broken. They wanted them to die so that their bodies could be taken down before the Sabbath began.'; Text[15]=' 16. When the soldiers came to Jesus, they saw that He had already died. One of them stuck a spear into Jesus\' side. Blood and water flowed out showing that He was indeed dead.'; Text[16]=' 17. Joseph of Arimathea went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. He was a member of the Council, but also a secret disciple of Jesus. Pilate gave him the body of Jesus.'; Text[17]=' 18. Nicodemus, another member of the Council and also a secret disciple of Jesus came to help Joseph. They took Jesus\' body down from the cross and wrapped it with spices in clean linen as was the custom.'; Text[18]=' 19. They buried Jesus in Joseph\'s new grave, a tomb in which no one had as yet been buried. Then they rolled a heavy stone in front of the door to the tomb.'; Text[19]=' 20. On Saturday evening, members of the Council asked Pilate to place a guard at the grave. Pilate gave permission. The grave was sealed and guarded.';
