THE ARMOR OF “WHAT IS WRITTEN”

After Alexander the Great the Greek language became the popular language worldwide and apparently scattered Jews knew only Greek. When the writers of the New Testament wrote to many Greek-speaking Jews, they wrote in Greek. While they were writing and were quoting the Old Testament, they never quoted the Hebrew writings, only the Greek, popularly called the Septuagint.[i]

The Greek has “the” before the word “faith” which would definitely make the “faith” an object; i.e., a system of belief. Otherwise, it could refer to just an action of believing. It is “the faith”: identifying a specific body of belief. What we are to believe. Our faith must be in the Word of God according to Jude 3.

THE ARMOR OF “WHAT IS WRITTEN”

Ephesians 6.

1.         V. 14 LOINS GIRT ABOUT WITH TRUTH, JOHN 17:17, “GOD'S WORD IS TRUTH”; the TRUTH is written.

2.         THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS 2 TiMOTHY 3:16  “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” - REVEALED IN THE INSPIRED SCRIPTURES, the written Word of God.

3. V. 15 SHOD FEETà GOSPEL OF PEACE. COLOSSIANS_1:5 , “For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel”, the Word of God.

4. V. 16 SHIELD OF (THE) FAITH EPHESIANS 6:15, 16,  “With all having taken up the shield of theG3588 belief,G4102 ; (ABP+ --Apostolic Bible Polyglot).

5. V. 17 HELMET OF SALVATION; ACTS_13:26  “Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.”

6. THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT  à THE RHEMA (WORD) OF GOD

SHIELD OF FAITH IS DEFINITELY THE WORD OF GOD, OUR OBJECT OF FAITH; HENCE, JESUS SPOKE, “IT IS WRITTEN”:

EPHESIANS 6:15,16,  “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  Above all, taking the shield of faith,* wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. “ -KING JAMES VERSION.

*THE FAITH; CONTEND FOR, Jude 1:3, “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” -KING JAMES VERSION.

Another translation:

Jude 1:3  “Beloved, [ all diligence having] to write to you concerning the common deliverance, [ necessity I had] to write to you, exhorting you to contend earnestly in theG3588 [ belief].G4102  ” - Apostolic Bible Polyglot

It is the same language used in the original Greek of Ephesians:

Ephesians 6:16  “ τονG3588 θυρεονG2375 τηςG3588 πιστεωςG4102  ” - Greek New Testament (Byzantine) with Strong's numbers.

Other English Translations:

Ephesians 6:16  “above all, having taken up the shield of the faith, in which ye shall be able all the fiery darts of the evil one to quench,”  -Young's Literal Translation

Ephesians 6:16, “in all things taking up the shield of the faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery *darts of the evil one.”  - Numeric English New Testament

Ephesians 6:16, “Besides all these, take up the shield of the faith, with which you will have the power to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one;”  - A Faithful Version

Ephesians 6:16,In addition to all these, take the Christian faith as your shield. With it you can put out all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” - God's Word

At a minimum of inspection, it can readily be seen, that the shield we are to use to fight off temptations, is the Word, the Scriptures. Jesus gives us the example for defeating temptations. IT IS WRITTEN.

Hence, the reason Paul urges study:  2 Timothy 2:15  “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

And Peter commands continued growth in the faith (by the Holy Spirit):  2 Peter 3:18  “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

This passage highlights the remedy for defense: Study and be ready with a “thus saith the Lord” to defend us.
