The Assemblies of God

(some quotes are from *the Holy Spirit Research Center -- The Origins of the Pentecostal (charismatic) Movement   by Vinson Synan, Ph.D.")

1. This movement began in the first of the twentieth century.

*'_all historians agree that the movement began during the first days of 1901 just as the world entered the Twentieth Century. The first person to be baptized in the Holy Spirit accompanied by speaking in tongues was Agnes Ozman, one of Parham's Bible School students, who spoke in tongues on the very first day of the new century, January 1, 1901. According to J. Roswell Flower, the founding Secretary of the Assemblies of God, Ozman's experience was the "touch felt round the world," an event which "made the Pentecostal Movement of the Twentieth Century."'

Question: When did Christ's Church begin?

Luke 24:46-49

46 Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

47 "and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48 "And you are witnesses of these things.

49 "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

(NKJV)

Matt. 16:18-19

18 "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

19 "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

(NKJV)

Mark 9:1

1 And He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power."

Rom. 16:16

16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you.

2. "Baptism in water" is a church ordinance for those who are already saved.

Question: Why did Jesus give the command to baptize believers?

3. Any Christian in this religion can be "baptized with the Holy Spirit" today.

*'It was Wesley's colleague, John Fletcher, however, who first called a second blessing a "baptism in the Holy Spirit," an experience which brought spiritual power to the recipient as well as inner cleansing. This was explained in his major work, Checks to Antinominianism (1771).'

Question: Is there anything today like the "baptism of the Holy Spirit" promised by Jesus to His apostles (Acts 1)?

4. Speaking in "tongues" is evidence of Holy Spirit baptism in this religion.

*"During the Nineteenth Century, thousands of Methodists claimed to receive this experience, although no one at the time saw any connection with this spirituality and speaking in tongues or any of the other charisms."

Question: Is there any blessing described as the "baptism of the Holy Spirit"?

5. Spiritual gifts are given to ones today in this religion and these people claim to work miracles.

Question: Did the Bible promise miracles to resume in the 20th Century after almost 2000 years?

6. The power to heal and work miracles comes through our prayers.

Question: Does the Bible ever mention praying for healing powers?

7. Failure to heal means the one sick did not have enough faith.

Question: Does the Bible require the recipient to have faith in order to be healed?

Is this a "cop out" for failure to perform the miracle? This was never a requirement of the dead being raised or the sick being healed by the apostles nor first century prophets.
NOTE: '2 Timothy 4:20 "Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick"' is sometimes used by holiness professors to prove that Paul could not heal Trophimus because of his lack of faith. Nothing is said about Trophimus' lack of faith. Nothing is said about Paul not being able to heal Trophimus. But rather, this passage would show that miraculous healing was not for personal gain.

8. These "miracles" testify to God's approval of the healer, say this religion.

Question: Are we to test the "healer" to see if he has the Spirit of God?

9. For anyone to ask for proof they can work miracles is doubting God.

Question: Can we question and test the "healers" and be pleasing to God?

10. Divine healing is possible today because God never changes.

Question: Was God to always perform miracles these 2000 years?
Where were the miracles for 1800 years?

11. This religion believes in premillenialism: that Christ will reign on earth 1000 years when He returns again.

Question: If he's not reigning now, will Jesus, according to Scriptures, ever reign?

To the top. end.
