THE NEW DAY in the NEW COVENANT

QUESTION: What are some changes that are "new" in the "New Covenant"?

Here are some misunderstandings about what the Bible teaches on this subject that I title as "errors".

ERRORERROR The new covenant would be like the old.

Bible. Jeremiah 31: 31,32: "Behold, the days come, saith the. Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt."

ERROR ERROR Only some of Israel's solemn assemblies would cease.

Bible. Hoshea 2: 11: "I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts."

ERRORERROR We must abstain from certain meats, as pork.

Bible. 1 Timothy 4: 3: "Forbidding to marry and com-manding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth."

Note: I was with the Adventists for a short while and was very impressed with the forbidding of eating pork. It was a long while before it dawned on me that "eating of pork" had nothing to do with the "Ten Commandments". If the Ten Commandments are binding today because it is the "Law of the Lord" why do the proponents add the "ceremonial law" of eating of meats to it? -gw

ERROR ERROR The evening begins a new day, and is not a part of the preceding one.

Bible. John 20: 19: "Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week."

"THE SAME DAY"

For the first time in Bible history (the resurrection day) the evening following the day is declared to be "the same day". Note: The Roman world used this day reckoning rather than the creation pattern. Gw

ERROR ERRORThe first day of the week is not the Lord's day.

Bible. Psalm 2:7: I will declare the decree; the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee."

"THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK"

It is the resurrection day of our Lord- Mark 16:9.

It is the day Jesus was begotten from the dead.-Romans 1:4.

It is the day the stone became the head of the corner-Psalm 118:22; Acts 2:30, 31; 4: 11; Isaiah 28-16.

"This is the day which the Lord hath made."-Psalms 118:24.

"This is the day" in which we will "re-joice and be glad" -Ibid.

ON the first day of the week...

The Lord began his work of creation- Genesis 1 :5.

Note: It is as if the Lord starts over with a New Beginning in many ways. gw

He rose from the dead -Mark 16:9

He brought joy to the bereaved -Luke 24:33,34.

He established his church -Acts 2:47.

He became the head of the church -Acts2: 33.

He ascended his throne -Acts 2:30.

He added three thousand to his church- -Acts 2:41.

He gave the Holy Spirit-

To the apostles in baptismal meas-ure -Acts 2:4.

To obedient believers, indwelling meas-ure -Acts 2:38.

The Holy Spirit empowered the apostles with miracles -Acts 2:33.

The Holy Spirit revealed the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ-

Acts 2: 23-30.

The Holy Spirit convicted the Jews of sin. -Acts 2:37.

The Holy Spirit announced the terms of pardon -Acts 2:38.

The gospel of purpose, promise, pro-phecy, preparation became the gospel of fact. -Acts 2:22-47.

The early disciples met together -Acts 20: 7.

They broke bread -Ibid.

They contributed -I Cor. 16:2.

They rejoiced -Psa. 118:24.

John, the aged apostle in the sunset of life, "WAS IN THE SPIRIT ON THE LORD'S DAY" -Rev. 1:10. .

ERRORERROR The pope changed the Sabbath to the first day of the week.

Bible. Acts 20: 7: "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them."

CONSIDER

The first day of the week is a new institution, Revelation 1: 10.

It is not a new "patch" on an old seventh-day "garment" -See Matthew 9:16.

It was not "changed" from anything, but "made" by the Lord-Psalm 118:24.

To the Adventists' challenge that Christians should show by the Bible where the Sabbath was changed, we answer that no one changed the "Sabbath" which was a part of the Ten Commandment Covenant given to the Hebrew nation. But our Lord fulfilled it; He nailed it to his cross; He abolished it for-ever (Colossians 2:14-17; etc.).

There is no inspired record where ANY faithful apostle, Christian evangelist, or congregation EVER kept the Sabbath as a New Testament institution.

The disciples observed the first day of the week many centuries before "Constantine's Sunday Law" or the ascend-ancy of the pope of Rome.

ERROR ERROR There remains a "seventh-day Sabbath" rest

to the children of God.

Bible. Hebrews 4: 9: "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God."

NOTE: It does not say seventh-day Sabbath rest!  '

ERROR ERROR But ]esus kept the Sabbath.

Galalians 4: 4, 5, 9, 10: "God sent forth his Son, made of woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the Law. . . .

But now after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage. Ye observe days, and months, and times, and 0 years."

Jesus kept the "ceremonial law" too.

. (Is that binding upon Christians also?)

He was born under the law -Gal. 4:4. But He "finished" the law -John 19:30.

He crucified the law -Col. 2:14.

He abolished the law -Eph. 2:15.

He made us dead to the Law -Romans7:4.

He made us free from the Law -Rom-ans 8:2.

We are not under the Law [i.e., the Torah] -Rom. 6:14.

Hence, we are not justified by the Law- -Acts 13:39.

ERROR ERROR The Ten-Commandment law was never "contrary to us"; hence, it was not included in the handwriting of ordinances nailed to the cross in Colossians 2: 14.

Bible. CoIossians 2: 14: "Blotting out the handwriting of the ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to the cross."

"CONTRARY TO US"

The glory of the Ten Commandments

was to fade away-2 Corinthians 3:7. .

The content of the Ten Commandments

was limited and inadequate-Matthew

5:27,28.

The provision of the Ten Command-ments was temporary -Until the seed

should come"-Galatians 3:19.

The penalty imposed by the Ten Com-mandments was death-without mercy-2 Corinthians 3:7.

The inscription of the Ten Command-ments was upon lifeless stones. -2 Corinthians 3:7.

The dedication of the Ten Command-ments was with animal blood. _Hebrews 9: 18, 19.

BUT MAN NEEDS

1. A law with unfading glory -2 Corinthians 3:8.

2. A law unlimited in provision for an man's spiritual needs -2 Peter 1:3.

3. A law everlasting, never to be abro-gated -Jude 3.

4. A law with mercy to the lost of earth -Hebrews 8:10-12..

5. A law inscribed, not upon stones, but upon the heart of the apostles -Hebrews 8:10.

6. A law dedicated with the blood of Christ, not animal blood.-

-Hebrews 9: 13-14.

7. A law of faith, not "work of the Law." -Romans 3:27.

8. A law that was faultless, not faulty- - Hebrews 8:7; James 1:25.

9. A law or covenant that was "better" than the first. -Hebrews. 8:6.

10. A law of liberty, not of bondage.- -Galatians 5:1; James 1:25.

11. A law of blessing, not a curse. -Galatians 3:8, 10.

12. A law that was final, not temporal. -Hebrews 13:20.

13. A law that was complete, not par-tial. -2 Peter 1: 5.

14. A law of the Spirit of life, not of sin and death. -Romans 8:2.

OBSERVATIONS:

The proponents of the eternal law for the seventh day are ready to change some things about Sabbath keeping yet contend the "Sabbath law" to he unchanged and binding??? Is this consistent?

They disdain the "ceremonial law", yet cling ceremoniously to the abstinence of pork???

ERROR ERROR The law was never added", hut was original with creation.

Bible. Galatians 3:19 "It was added because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made."

ERRORERROR There was no limit on the duration of the law. I

Bible. Gal. 3: 19 ". . . Till the "seed should come."
